“in space, no one can hear you scream.”
It was ladies and children under-12 night in the Fenerbahce vs. Maispor game due to a ban on men handed down by the Turkish FA due to a violent pitch invasion that occurred during a pre-season friendly. Our friends at Soccerpolitics wrote a great analysis of the meaning behind the night’s events. How about that atmosphere?

that’s interesting. do the 47.5% of people opposing this move do so because they fear that it’s a cosmetic approach to combating racism? or are there other good reasons to do so?
i believe in mario with fannish faith. i clicked yes to the proposal that he be made captain for one day now because i, as a fan, expect that he will go on to be italy’s captain full-time at some point in the future. as i’ve said before, i don’t believe that it will make a difference to the racism he plays with, plays for, plays against and plays in front of. his success, his status, his character — none of this is really the subject of the racism.
this reminds me of the ‘if only some REALLY BIG NAME would come out it would clear the way for gay footballers’ strain of thought in one sense. i mean, sure, if cron or leo messi came out it would be a big deal and get more people thinking than usual. but that cannot handwave institutional responsibility, and the responsibility of a community, to treat human beings without discrimination whether they are on a football field or in the stands. the onus should not be on a gay superstar. the onus should not be on an italian captain who ‘happens to be black.’ mario is not the one on trial.
so as wish fulfillment i’m behind this proposal to give mario the armband, one hundred percent. i also want him to be a star in 2014 and go on to lift a trophy in 2016 or ‘18, and i want him to play for milan. but these are tangential to the issue.
i don’t remember the last time football made me that happy. not that this is your fault or anything, milan.
EURO 2012 Qualifying may be over for the time being and although England are in second place behind Montenegro, here is a little glimpse of your average Englishman’s perception of European footballing nations. This is English Football’s Map of Europe by our friend Charlie Anderson (@lucianosays). Be sure to have a look at his site (Things Fall Apart) as well. I think it’s just about right, yeah? It’s all about coming out as the moral victor.
